HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS

DENTAL HYGIENE     PROGRAM CODE: DH3100 (Program under Ministry renewal, for details contact info@huroncollege.ca)

Duration: Three semesters – 76 weeks                   

Teaching Method: Instructor-led and practical

Admission requirements: 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or 12th Grade (equivalent or Higher) with Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English and College Entrance Test (No fee)
  • Must be fluent in English
  • ESL Medical is a prerequisite to International students without TOEFL or IELTS scores

Foreign trained dentists and Dental Assistant graduates are given preference and exempted from the Entrance test requirement but must provide the copies of their credentials at the time of the application.

Other requirements: 

  • Standard Current First Aid and Level C CPR Certification (must remain current throughout the program)
  • Hepatitis B & C immunization is required
  • Medical doctor's certification of current health condition
  • Police check (clearance) of criminal record
  • Immunization status must be up to date

Objective: The philosophy of the Dental Hygiene Program at the College is one of commitment to the education of oral health professionals who are capable of integrating educational, clinical and individual services that support and promote the total health of the patient as well as optimal oral health. The facilities offer a good environment for basic science and pre-clinical instruction, laboratory and clinical experiences. Faculty are dedicated to excellence, sensitive to the depth of the curriculum offered, offer a wide range of professional experiences, and attempt to establish an atmosphere of respect and understanding with students. The program goals require that students provide appropriate treatment of oral diseases, apply the scientific principles and an analytic approach to all aspects of dental hygiene practice, act as an integral member of the health team, communicate effectively with patients and colleagues and demonstrate skills necessary to enhance continued professional development.

Career Opportunities: Graduates must successfully complete the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination to be eligible for registration by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario. As a licensed Dental Hygienist, graduates may find employment in general and specialty dental practices. In addition, there are numerous opportunities to practice in hospitals, public health units, community health clinics, collective living centres, research, industry and educational institutions. Dental Hygienists have an extremely high rate of employment and/or self- employment opportunities with an average earning of $33.00 per hour. The Dental Hygiene profession has been known to be desirable due to flexible hours and the many part-time and full-time career opportunities available. The successful graduates of this program may be employed as a Dental Hygienist in Dental offices/clinics/ laboratories, Specialty Dental offices and/or clinics (i.e. Periodontics, Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Prosthodontics and Endodontics), Dental Hygiene offices and/or clinics, Hospitals, Public Health Departments, Community health settings, Research, Educational Institutions, Sales and Marketing, Administration, and Private Consulting.

Relevant Information: The College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) is the regulatory body for Dental Hygiene in the Province of Ontario. In order to practice Dental Hygiene in the Province of Ontario, a person must be registered with the CDHO. The practice of Dental Hygiene is regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Dental Hygiene Act, 1991.

Huron College of Management, Technology and Health Care's Dental Hygiene Program is not accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC). Graduates of this program must apply to the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB) and the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO). Graduates of this program must write and pass the NDHCE (National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination).

Graduates are also required to take a provincial clinical competency assessment in addition to the NDHCE. Students are responsible for contacting the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board and College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) to find out the details with respect to writing the NDHCE and registering with the CDHO.

Applicants with Foreign Credentials: Applicants who have graduated from high school and/or a post-secondary institution in a foreign country are required to have their diplomas evaluated on a course-by-course basis by the World Education Services to determine if their foreign education is equivalent to an OSSD and courses taken are equivalent to the above requirements. All applicable fees associated with the World Education Services are the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants must arrange to have copies of the evaluation forwarded to Huron College of Management, Technology and Health Care directly from World Education Services by the required deadlines.

DENTAL OFFICE AND CHAIR SIDE ASSISTANT                  PROGRAM CODE: DO3100

Duration: Two semesters – 38 weeks                   

Teaching Method: Instructor-led and practical with co-op

Admission requirements: 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or 12th Grade (equivalent or Higher) with Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English

  • An entrance assessment and interview may be required for mature students

Objective: The Dental Assistant is a vital member of the dental team, performing duties under the personal supervision of a dentist. Responsibilities are varied to help increase the dentist's service to patients. Our goal is to prepare a graduate who will be competent and confident in performing the skills of a Dental Assistant which include; assisting dentists with extra-oral procedures; educating patients about dental health, take and develop X-rays, as well as many other delegated duties.

PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER                  PROGRAM CODE: SW3100

Duration: Two semesters – 32 weeks                   

Teaching Method: Instructor-led and practical with co-op

Admission requirements: 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or 12th Grade (equivalent or Higher) with Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English

  • An entrance assessment and interview may be required for mature students

Objective: The goal of this career program is to help individuals master the personal and occupational skills required to care for people living at long-term care facilities, hospitals, client's home, the consumer/client workplace and congregate housing facilities. The Personal Support Worker Program was developed as part of the Government's plan to reform long-term care and support services. Long-term care and support workers form the backbone of community and facility services.

Objective: The Early Childhood Assistant program is the foundation stone for a challenging and rewarding career in the field of early child care and education. Early years of childhood are a time of rapid intellectual, social, emotional and physical development. It is at this stage that the role of early childcare professionals becomes all the more crucial. LIVE-IN-CAREGIVER / NANNY                  PROGRAM CODE: CG3100

Duration: Two semesters – 25 weeks                    

Teaching Method: Instructor-led

Admission requirements: 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or 12th Grade or equivalent or Higher
  • Medium fluency of English language required (Must be able to read, write and follow the class)
  • An entrance assessment and interview may be required for mature students

Objective: This unique program aims at equipping the Caregivers / Nannies with the skills demanded by the employers. Care givers / Nannies care for children, sick and elderly on an ongoing or short-term basis at home or in the homes as Live in Care givers / Nannies. They are usually self-employed or may be employed by babysitting agencies or senior care homes. Nannies care for children in the employer's residence and provide for their health and physical and social development. Parent's helpers assist parent with child-care and household duties. Nannies and parent's helpers are employed by private households, where they may also reside. They play a supportive role to the parents with kids or become personal attendants to the sick and elderly.

Care givers / Nannies are employed as babysitters, child caregivers, private home child-care provider, private home live-in caregiver, nannies and as Parent's helpers.

ESL Medical    

ESL medical is a prerequisite to International students without TOEFL or IELTS scores. The English language study is designed to prepare International students to meet the standard necessary for their chosen program in writing technical papers, lecture note taking, reading academic materials and making presentations. Students also acquire the following skills:

  • Gain a solid foundation in medical language
  • Explore body system dynamics
  • Learn disease terms & Master proper pronunciation
  • Study of word elements (prefixes, suffixes and roots), terms in anatomy and physiology, selected diseases, symptoms, procedures, x-ray and laboratory tests in common usage, and commonly used abbreviations
